Week of Jan 25, 2010

Monday was a work day in Dade City and then on Tuesday we packed up the Bus and headed down to Tampa, about 23 miles , to Lazydays, which we had been to before. It is a large dealership of Rv's with a camping area. We came here for some R&R and also to attend a Rally of Fleetwood Owners, which is a club for people who own the different brands of motorhomes made by Fleetwood. We have met some new friends from NC and lots of other aquaintence. Saw a couple from Selmer Tn., at knows people we know. It is a small world.
On a sad note my Aunt Juanita Boyett Humphrey died this week. She was married to my Mom's baby brother and was the last of that generation. Several of my cousins and I have had " good cries" this week while remembering all the good times we had with Aunt Nita.
We have had good food, good entertainment here and also been to "Parksdale" to get strawberry milkshakes. Plant City if known for growing strawberries.
Tomorrow we will move back up to Dade City and work for 2 weeks before the next group of RV Care A Vanners come in for another 2 week build. We will finish building on Feb 26th and then Larry and I are going to Disney to meet Ally and family for a few days. After that we will go to Naples for somemore R&R and hope to get in a trip to Key West with Donna and Chuck by way of a boat that leaves from Naples or Marco Island and stay one night there.
Last night we went to Catfish Willies for dinner with my cousin Janice and her husband. Then we went back to their house and visited until almost 11pm. Jan and I grew up together in Georgia. Our moms were sisters.
I will try and post some pictures later.

End of 1st Care A Vanner Build 1-22-10

We have had a wonderful 2 weeks building in Dade City, Florida. As you already know the first few days were COLD but it has warmed up and things got done. We got a house framed, roof truss up and braced and now we are ready for the next group to put the sheeting on for the roof to be shingled. Sliding was done on another house , fencing put up around a house, and fun was had by all. We laughed a lot, ATE a lot and just generally had a good time. Last evening 1/22 we had a hot dog, brat, Potluck with all the trimming included Jerry Bos(from Zeeland Michign) wife Sara's famous lemon pie & lemon bars at she makes from the lemons on the tree in their yard down here. We measure Builds by the number of pounds people gain and I think this one could be a 10 pound build. We have had lots of wonderful food.

Larry and I certainly enjoyed being the Team Leaders for this group but didn't get to do a lot of work ourselves as far as building as we have to make sure everyone else has something to do.

We hate to see people leave today but know that we will get another good group in to do more work next week. It is not an organized build but people can just drop in. The next Care A Vanner Build starts on Feb 15th and we will be Leaders for that one also.

Sunday 1-17-2010

Hard to believe the first week of building is done. We finished all the touch up work on the house that was to be dedicated yesterday. Some of the group worked on a demolition project at an old school, others worked on new construction and everyone was very tired on Friday afternoon. We all went out to dinner at Beef o Gradys here in Dade City and had a great time. Saturday morning was the dedication so most of attended. I will post some of the pictures of this. Afterwards everyone sort of did their own thing such as bike riding, sewing, cleaning , laundry etc.

We have a little thing going with "Mr. Bong", who is a ugly little critter, but so lovable. Someone is awarded Mr. Bong everyday for a "boo boo" of some sort. We have to be careful what we do and how we do it. This makes for a lot of fun for all of us. I had Mr. Bong for now setting the coffee pot correctly on Wednesday so there was no coffee for everyone that morning plus I took a couple of ladies to the store and tried to see how hot I could get the car. Had the airconditioner on but the heat control on too. Does that tell you I was tired?

Today a group of us are going to church with Irma, a lady who volunteers here at the site, she got her house from Habitat several years ago. I have always wanted to go to a Black church service and here we go. I asked Irma if I needed to pack a lunch. She is so funny and everyone loves her. Ally said she would pay to see this since she thought her Mom and Dad would never go. I plan to make a few pictures just to prove we went. I am confident the music will be great.

Coming back after church and watch the Dallas/Minnesota football game.

First Day of the Habitat Build in Dade City, Fl. 1/2010

The first day got off to a very cold start around 8 am on Jan 11, 2010. We have 10 rigs with 18 people from various walks or life and places.
Lots of work was done on cleaning a house that will be dedicated on Saturday, walls went up on new construction and finishing touches on another house.
This is a wonderful group of people and will prove to be a great 2 week build.
Updates later.

Sunday morning 1-10-10

Okay things are looking up at the Big "A" Bus. The repairmen arrived at 8:45 am on Saturday morning along with the cold rain and cold temps. Actually at one time there was sleet coming down and ice hanging off the trees. This is suppose to be Florida. Oh well, s____ happens.
I spent the morning with Tracy in their 5th wheel knitting and drinking coffee and staying warm. Several of the rigs came in and Larry was busy parking them. Peggy & Jim Settles arrived around noon so I went to visit with them and they offered us lunch since we couldn't get into our coach and at the same time Larry was watching for other people to come in.
We now have all our chickens on the roost and work will start on Monday morning.
The repairmen finished around 4 pm and we now have a working refrigerator. YEA!!!!!!!. I had to let it stay empty until it reached a certain tempature and it is there this morning so now I can WORK and put everything back in there and I am not complaining because I am so thankful to have it working. We were very fortunate that we had bought another extended warranty policy on the coach this past July before we took the trip out West so we only had to pay the deductible and trust me it was a lot less than the entire price of this little adventure.
We meet with all the Care A Vanners this afternoon around 5pm to get them informed as to what we will be doing for the next 2 weeks .
More on the Build after Monday.

Arrival in Dade City Florida for 2010

The Big "A" Bus arrived in Dade City, Florida around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 and is now parked and hopefully won't have to move for a while. It is COLD down here but hopefully by the middle of next week it will be up in the 70's so they are predicting.
Larry went over this morning to the "gathering" before work is started by the regulars that are here but I decided today would be my day to stay in my PJ's for a while since our Build doesn't start until Monday. Some of our caravans will be arriving tomorrow but most will come in on Saturday so we have to figure out where to park everyone.
Hopefully the refrigerator repairman will be here around 11 am and can do a quick fix. The old saying "you don't miss the water until the well is dry" is very true cause not having a "frig" working is the pits.

Travels of 2010

The Big "A" Bus is back on the road heading South but not having much luck finding warmer weather. We left Virginia on Sunday 1-3-10 and had a great first day with not much traffic but a lot of wind. We spent the night outside of Florence SC.

Monday morning we discovered that everything in the refrigerator was rather warm. To make a long story short---- IT AINT WORKING. We had to buy ice chests and ice and put everything in them.

Stopped for an early lunch outside of Santee SC and visited with a first cousin of mine, Mary Purvis.

We arrived in Rincon, Georgia at the campground and the intent was to visit my niece in the afternoon and evening and that got put on hold due to the refrigerator and also I discovered that the sink drain had come loose and water was going everywhere. Needless to say a trip to Lowes was in order to get parts to fix that. We finally got showers and headed to bed.
Tuesday morning we went over to see Susanne and I spent most of the day with her. Larry came back to the motorhome for his nap and also to add more ice to the chest. Now as cold as it is in Georgia, we could probably put things outside and it would be okay.
We hope to leave early on Wednesday and get into Dade City by mid afternoon. Larry talked with a repairman who will come over after we get settled and check out the refrigerator. He was very nice to talk with and said he would waive the service call charge since we are working for Habitat.
More on the saga of this trip later
