Catching UP

After we left Americus  Georgia in March we went to Louisville Ky and did some of the bourbon trail then to Indy to visit the kids and then to Madisonville Ky for a Habitat Build.   We had a wonderful time meeting old friends and making new friends.

We got back to Virginia on May 7th. and it  has been crazy since then.

As most of you know I have been having issues with my back for about 2 years so we decided that when we got back here we would find out what could be done to FIX me.
To make a long story short last Monday July 24th I had back surgery.  I had fusion of the L4 and L5, cyst removed, disc fixed and I am actually walking without pain in my legs.

Prior to surgery we did some camping with our ODC Chapter of Good Sams, painted, installed air conditioner in our living area of the RV Port, and spent a lot of time at doctors appointments getting ready for surgery.

We had to change some plans for several HFH obligations for teaching safety but my health was the most important thing.

About three weeks ago Larry had a little mishap with the tractor and jammed his shoulder and hurt his knee.   Well the knee turned out to be a major problem.   He has a bone bruise, bad sprain and is in a brace for about two months.   We are the walking wounded here.

Not much else to report.  Hoping to get to travel to Georgia in mid September for a 55th class reunion.

This was use attending President Jimmy Carters Sunday School Class in Plains, Georgia

March 12 thru April 3 2017

We spent three weeks in Americus, Georgia working with Habitat on a lot of different projects.   Jeff and Laura Walker, Chris and Tom Gibson, both from Michigan. Carol and Bill James from Pennsylvania and of course David and Mary Vandeveld from Michigan.
Lots of repairs were made in the Global Village of Habitat and lots of repair and painting in four apartments that are in house belonging to Habitat that are used as guest housing when there are conferences and training classes.
I spent most of my time helping Mary with office work and folding tee shirts again like I did last year.   Must have done about 1000 this time.
Since the Safety Program requirements are being stepped up I did lots of computer work on that and also helped Mary get ready for the Affiliate Conference in Atlanta in Atlanta and also the DRT training that is being held in Americus this week.

We did have some free time on the weekend and enjoyed visiting Kononea Farms where Habitat was started, the boyhood home of former President Jimmy Carter, a museum in the old Plains, Georgia high school about the Carters. On Sunday March 26 we had the pleasure of going to Marathan Baptist Church to President Carters Sunday School Class.  It starts at 10 am and people started forming a line at 4:15am.  We were lucky to have made reservations thru Habitat.  It was a great service and we got to have a picture made with them afterwards.  President Carter told Larry he liked his beard,
We left Americus on Saturday April 1 and came to Pine Mountain Georgia which was called Chipley until 1958.   Larry had lived in Hamilton which is about 8 miles from here, and went to school there in 1952 and 1953.  His Dad had a barber shop there.
We had dinner last night with Carol Bowman and Kim Harris who are Care A Vanners and today we are CHILLING.   It is raining and going to be stormy so Larry is working on taxes and I am doing bills and catching up on other things.
Tomorrow we plan to go to the Little White House in Warm Spring Georgia where President Franklin D Roosevelt came for his polo.
My brother was there when he was about 14 for treatment.I remember visiting him there when I was 5. Also going over to Fort Benning to military museum.  We were going to Callaway Gardens but our friends encouraged us not to do that as things have sort of fallen apart with the upkeep of the gardens . After all I have seen many azaleas and dogwoods in my life without paying $30 to drive thru and look.
After this we are going back to Bainbridge to visit family and then start working our way to Indianapolis and then on to Madisonville Ky before heading home early May.

End of February until March 2017

Had more time with Cara, Kirbo and Jerry while back in Lafayette.  Jerry was wonderful to his Aunt Mem and Uncle Larry as he calls us by giving us an eye exam and new lenses for our glasses without any charge.   He is a keeper.

Larry and Tracey came for a two night visit on their way to Texas.   We had a great time catching up  with all the things that have been happening with all of us.   Got to show her the shutterfly book book Taylor gave us for Christmas of she and Anthony's wedding.

Left Layafette on Monday March 6 and headed to Bainbridge, Ga.   It was a very windy day so we stopped in Robertsdale Al for the night.   On to Bainbridge on Tuesday to visit with the Newberrys and other family.   Got to see Thelma and Glenda but Aunt Florence couldn't make it.  She just celebrated her 90th birthday and the closest thing I have left to Aunt Nita.

Left Bainbridge on saturday around eleven and drove to Americus where we are now for about 2 1/2 weeks working Habitat.  After that plan on doing some sightseeing such as Callaway Gardens, The Little White House and etc. Back to Bainbridge after that and then head on up to Indy to keep the girls and Grizzly for about 3 nights before going to Madisonville, Ky for another build.   Noah, Ally and Doug will be going to Dallas Tx for a basketball tournament.

More later and hopefully one day get some pictures back on here.

August 2016 thru February 2017

Well what can I say  I have been very lazy about posting but it ha been very very busy since August.

After our trip to Duncansville Pa. we came back and attended a campout with our ODC Chapter in Williamsburg.   I was still having a lot of pain with my back so we went back to see the doctor, had another epidural and more test.   My GP put me on Zoloft to help me deal with the pain and some other things going on in the family.

September found us getting into full swing for the upcoming wedding of our oldest granddaughter, Taylor Halstead to a wonderful young man Anthony Martin.  That all involved building a bridge for her to walk across down by the pond on our property at 7448 Ellisville Dr. Louisa, Va.  Major cleaning around the pond and surrounding areas where the ceremony was to take place.   Thanks to Anthony's help with Larry and then about 15 of the SHMC motorcycle club came out on a Saturday morning and made short work of finishing up the cleaning by cutting trees, clearing brush etc.
My friend Jackie Edmond's and I made all the cupcakes for the reception.  It rained and rained but the morning of the wedding it was clear.  Jackie and I attended a shower for Taylor in Fredericksburg in mid Sept. given by Cathy Kerr and Jack Hill's daughter Kristin .Anthony's Mom and grandmother plannned a nice reshersal dinner out at our house.

All during this time I was having more and more test on my back as it was thought that I might possibly have bone cancer.   Thank the Lord all the test came back negative but it was a very stressful time . I had some wonderful doctors who kept reassuring me that all was going to be fine and it has been.  I am still having back pain but it is pretty much under control.  Due to all this we had to miss going to South Carolina in mid Sept to attend Deb Dorris 60th birthday.

OCTOBER 1, 2016

THE WEDDING DAY.

The rain finally stopped about midnight Friday Sept 30th and we had a clear day for the ceremony except for MUD.   However the farmer who rents our and provided bales of straw for us to sit on and also to put down for everyone to walk on.   It was a great time.   Tay and Anthony had surprised us when they wanted to get married out there but also when he asked Larry (Papa) to marry them.   He had to get a one time certificate from the State of Virginia to do this but was very honored to do it.
We all adjourned after this back to Fredericksburg for the reception at Bowmans Distillery at 6 PM.
Wow what a wonderful time.   Julie had outdone herself all summer making the decorations and planning this party .   A GREAT time was had by all

We finished up October with a campout with ODC at Greys Point.

November we drove out to Indy to spend a little time with Ally and family and were there for Kate's 12th birthday.   Spent Thanksgiving with friends who are renting our house. Oh I forgot during this time Larry and Skip Edmonds were working on the enclosure of the living area in the shop.

December found us helping with the ODC Christmas party and getting ready for Christmas in Indiana with Ally and family.. Came back to Virginia and spent a late Christmas celebration with Bry and family.

Larry was sick on New Years Eve but I had dinner with Chris and Jess and then they went to bed early and so did I,

We left Virginia on Jan 18th and headed to Louisiana for a habitat build.   I told Larry I could hurt there as well as in Virginia.   I have been able to do somethings but not like I have done in the past.
We worked two weeks then left and went to Arlington Texas to visit Larry and Maryjane Phillips for the first time in about 4 years.   We had a great time with them. Back to Lafayette last Sunday and have just been tourist this week . I have also been going to a chiropractor who is doing actupuncture on my back which is helping.   My cousin Cara and her husband Jerry convinced us that I needed to try this.We went to a Mardi Gras parade yesterday along with Cara and Jerry and Kirbo, their 2 year old who was attending his first parade.  Dr. Johnson the chiropractor asked us to come to his house for the cookout and parade.

Next Monday friends Kim and Mike McNabb from Independence La are coming over to visit and then on March 4 Larry and TracySaulsgiver are coming for a couple of nights and then we head to Bainbridge Georgia to visit family before going to Americus for another build.
